ImaamʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd ibn ʿUbayd, the Imam, Hadith Master, Authority in Transmission, and the Musnid of Baghdad, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Baghdādī.
His Encounter with al-Maʾmūn
ʿAbd al-Razzāq ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated:
“I heard my father say: Al-Maʾmūn once summoned jewel merchants and engaged them in a discussion about their goods. After a while, he left to attend to some business and then returned. When he entered, everyone in the gathering stood up for him—except for ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd.”
Al-Maʾmūn looked at him with displeasure, then signalled for him to meet him in private.
He asked: “O Shaykh, what prevented you from standing?”
ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd replied:
“O Commander of the believers, I refrained from standing out of reverence for a hadith that we narrate from the Prophet ﷺ.”
Al-Maʾmūn asked: “And what is that hadith?”
He responded:
*”I heard Mubārak ibn Faḍālah say, that he heard al-Ḥasan say:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Whoever loves that men should stand for him out of honour, let him take his seat in the Fire.’“1
Hearing this, al-Maʾmūn fell silent in contemplation. Then he raised his head and declared:
“No purchases should be made except from this man!”
That day, they bought from him thirty thousand dinars’ worth of goods!.
