The Humility of Imāmu Dhahabi

A beautiful example of the humility of the scholars is the example of Imām Ad Dhahabi

What his contemporaries said concerning him:

Ibn Kathīr Said concerning him: “The Shaikh and great memoriser (of hadeeth), the Historian of Islam and the Shaikh of the Scholars of Hadeeth Shamsudīn Abu Abdillah Muhammad Ibn Uthmān Ad Dhahabi…The one who was the seal of the scholars of hadeeth and its memorisers..”.

(Al Bidāyah Wan Nihāyah 18/500)

Ibn Nāsirud dīn Ad Damishqi said: “The Shaikh, the Imām, The Great Magnanimous Memoriser, the one who benefited (the region of) Shām, The historian of Islām and critique of the scholars of hadīth, the Imām of those who praise and disparage, Shamsudīn Abu Abdillah…”

(Ar Radd Wāfir P31)

From his humility is that he added himself to his book concerning weak narrators ‘Dhailu Dīwān Ad Dhu’afā’.

He said concerning himself (345):

“Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Uthmān Al Faariqi (his own full name):

سيء الحفظ, ليس بالمتقن و لا بالمتقي, سامحه الله
“He has bad memory, he is not precise, neither is he God-fearing, May Allah
pardon him”
