A supplication equivalent to making dhikr all day and all night!

Upon the authority of Abu Umaamah who said: The Prophet saw me and I was moving my lips so he said:

What are you saying Oh Abu Umaamah?

I said: “I am remembering Allah” so he said: “Should I not point you towards that which is more abundant than you remembering Allah all night and day?

You should say:

Al Hamdulillāh ‘adada maa khalaq – (All Praise is due to Allah, praises like the number of everything he has created)

Al Hamdulillāh Mil’a1 maa khalaq (All praise is due to Allah, praises filling everything he has created)

• الحَمْدُ لِله عَدَدَ ما في السَماواتِ وما في الأَرْض – Al Hamdulillāh ‘adada maa fis Samaawaati wa maafil Ard – (All praise is due to Allah, praises like the number of everything in the heavens and everything on earth)

Al Hamdulillāh ‘adada maa ahsaa kitaabuhu (All praise is due to Allah, praises like the number of that which is recorded in his book)

Al Hamdulillāh mil’a maa ahsaa kitaabuhu (All praise is due to Allah, praises filling everything recorded by his book)

Al Hamdulillāh ‘adada kulli shay (All praise is due to Allah, praises like the number of everything)

Al Hamdulillāh mil’a kulli shay (All praise is due to Allah, praises filling the number of everything)

Then make tasbeeh (i.e. say Subhanallāh) in a like manner.

In a version collected by At Tabaraani in Mu’jam Al Kabeer there is the additional wording at the end of the hadeeth after the mention of tasbeeh “..and make takbeer in a like manner” (Declared ‘Sahīh‘ by Shaikh Albaani in ‘Sahīh At Targheeb: 2/118)

Then he said: “Teach this to your offspring after you

(Collected by Imām Ahmad in his Musnad and declared ‘Sahīh’ By Sh Albāni in Sahīh Al jāmi’ (1615) and ‘As Sahīhah’ (2578)

  1. The statement mil’a مِلْءَ literally means to fill something, when it occurs in supplications relating to extolling the praise of Allah, it is a reference to a great abundance of that praise. Al Khataabi mentioned: “It is an example used to make a reality easier to comprehend. The intent is abundance in number such that if one were to perceive the aforementioned thing as a tangible body then it would fill it..” (See Qurtubi’s ‘Ikmaal Al Mu’mil‘ (2/391) ↩︎
